What Is Golden Light?
The best time to photograph is during the ‘Golden Hour.’ The Golden Hour is about an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset. It is the perfect lighting because you don’t squint when looking in the direction of the sun and it casts a beautiful warm glow over you.
This is the most flattering light and can really accentuate your photos. You can position your subject a few ways during this light:
- From behind so that the golden light is behind them so that it lights up their hair and body like a halo.
- From the side so that one side of the subject is lit up with the golden glow.
- From in front so that the subject is positioned with them looking into the sun and a warm glow is cast over their face.
You can see 2 examples above. The first you can see a halo around the child’s hair with the golden light positioned from behind. In the second example you can see it from the side with the golden light cast on the side of the tree and bride.
The next time you want to photograph a subject, think about the time of day and go out just after sunrise or just after sunset to add this gorgeous golden light in your photos.
